Irish Tour - 12th October 2001

Gaughan's Irish tour Epistle, Part the Second
Dublin, 10.00am, Friday 12th Oct 2001

Great night at Whelan's last night but very hot; I was soaked by the time I finished. Gigs start later over here and it was 9.15 before I went on and 11.45 by the time I got offstage.

There are some cities where the audience rise to the occasion and where heckling is such a fine art that the wise performer dooesn't attempt to compete but goes along with it. Belfast, Glasgow, Liverpool - and Dublin. There were a few good lines thrown at me last night which had me laughing but I can't remember them this morning.

It was nice to see Naimh Parsons who had just got back from the Forkhill singers weekend. She's a fine singer. One of the rarely commented on but very real factors involved in this kind of music is that it has created a fairly tight-knit community of people around the world who don't see each other very often but have the intimacy and affection of old friends.

Niamh told me last night that Ron Kavana is back living in Fermoy and intends coming to the Lobby tonight so I'm looking forward to seeing him again. Wonder if he's written any songs recently I can steal. Since hearing his wild version of my song, "No Cause for Alarm", I haven't been able to sing it. His is without doubt the definitive version. Even though I wrote it, I can't imagine anyone ever doing it better, certainly not me.

So, time to go feed the parking meter to give me an hour's grace in which to have breakfast and pack the car before facing the dreadful Dublin city centre traffic jams. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day when you're on the road as you never really know for certain whether you'll get the chance to have another meal that day so a large plate of scrambled egg and white pudding with a gallon of coffee isn't the worst idea I'm likely to have today.

It's definitely Friday so it's definitely Cork
