Irish Tour - 26th October 2001

Gaughan's Irish tour Epistle, Part the Last
Belfast, 3.00am, Friday 26th Oct 2001

The gig in Belfast was a hoot. When I got there I found out that the opening spot would be done by Chuck Brodsky. For those of you who don't know him, he's a superb songwriter and singer from N Carolina in the USA. I first met him years ago at the Philadelphia Festival where we did a workshop together. I had launched into a song and halfway through, my guitar strap broke. I was standing on one leg trying to support the guitar on my raised knee when I felt someone's arms coming round me from behind - Chuck grabbed the guitar and held it up until I finished the song.

It was good to see him again. He did a great set and the audience loved him.

Thank you, Ireland, the fine time I had. Now I grab a few hours' sleep before catching the ferry from Belfast to Troon and it'll be the Greentrax 15th Birthday bash in Edinburgh's Queens Hall on Saturday. Then I have a short break to do essential things like laundry, paying bills and sleeping before starting the final stretch of this year's touring with my annual southern trip throughout November and December. I start with one Scottish gig in Bellshill on Nov 7th then it's off to the Land to the South where I'll be until the final gig in Carlisle on December 14th.

It's been fun doing these meandering reports - thanks to Sophie for asking me. If anyone asks you what musicians do during the day you can give them an informed answer - most of us drive, eat, do interviews, soundcheck and try to catch up on sleep. When it comes to sex and drugs and rock'n'roll, somebody else got my share of the sex and drugs - I'm too busy singing and driving!

See y'all somewhere along the road. Until then, keep looking at the light. It's there, even if you do have to look quite hard for it at times.
